1 Month ban for YouTube in Egypt - What's next?

Saturday, May 26, 2018 – The courts in Egypt ruled to block out YouTube from access within the Country. The initial ruling is that the ban on YouTube will last 30 days.

A short video, ‘Innocence of Muslims’, stands in the heart of this ruling. This 13 minute video is said to be degrading the Prophet Muhammad, and provocative to Muslims.

This case has been in and out of the Courts in Egypt since 2013. It was initially appealed, mainly due to problems enforcing it.

The ministry of Communications and Information Technology in Egypt said blocking out YouTube would have a huge negative financial impact. YouTube access has been allowed during the appeal period.

Today (Saturday May 26, 2018), YouTube will be blocked for one month in Egypt. With no possibility to appeal.

Egypt Blocks YouTube – What now?

In my opinion, the one month ban on YouTube is just the beginning. Now that the dam has been breached, It’s a slippery slope.

Authoritarian Governments, even those with Democratic election process and institutes,  always tend to minimize media coverage and access to media outlets.

Blocking YouTube for one reason, even if there’s is a wall to wall consensus about it, is crossing the line.

Next time, it would be banned for a different reason. Then, Facebook? WhatsApp ? Who knows ?
